My time in Zion was limited, but I knew this was one spot I absolutely had to get to. I woke up in what still felt like it was the dead of night and was able to shared the morning with no one but a flock of turkeys. Gotta be honest, their gobbles and the sounds of rushing water were a pairing better than wine and cheese. .
What’s the craziest thing you’ve done for a sunrise?
(1) Twisty mountain trails lead to a view for miles atop Zion National Park’s Kolob Terrace in Utah. (2) The Mars-like landscape of Zion’s colorful canyon is made of layers of sandstone, mudstone, shale, and limestone. (3,4) The cliffs are accessible by steep, purple roads that complement the scenery. According to the National Park Service, Zion was a flat basin near sea level 240 million years ago. Over eons, sand, mud, and gravel became eroded and uplifted to form the topography we see today. 🏞

"I've wasted too much moonlight
Breast beating. I'll waste no more moonlight,
the moon bullied by clouds drifts west
in her imponderable arc, snared for a half
hour among the wet leaves in the birdbath."

This is why we can never get an early start in the morning...
