Hello all, so topic of discussion today is compound vs isolation movements and which one is better. If you don’t know, compound movements are multi joint movements that involve multiple muscle groups like squats, deadlifts, and bench press. Isolation movements are single jointed exercises that focus on only one muscle group such as bicep curls, calf raises, and lateral raises. So which one is better then? Both (depending on goals)! Multi joint (MJ) and single joint (SJ) movements provide different benefits depending on what your goals are. - - Based on research, MJ movements “are generally preferred and recommended because they translate to more types of common movement patterns” in daily life (Quinn). When your wanting to promote more muscle growth, compound movements are the way to go as they use multiple muscles and allow you to lift, push, pull, squat, more weight. MJ movements allow more improvements in progressive overload when your wanting to strength. More benefits include: more calories burned, time manageable (get workout done faster), improved coordination and joint stability, decrease in injury in sports, cardiovascular benefits, and much more (Quinn). - - For isolation movements, these exercises are good for correcting “muscle imbalance or weakness [...] after an injury” (Quinn). This allows for you to correct any type of “biomechanical imbalance that is difficult to incorrect” (Quinn). Another reason is that performing SJ movements can improve strength in lagging muscles like calves and forearms that don’t get much attention.
