📚As far as I know I’m lucky enough to have the ELL students in my class this year! I want to make our classroom as inviting and accessible as possible. I made sure to include the English and Spanish on my book bin labels. The little things are big things. #iteachfourth #backtoschool #lovewhatyoudo
✨Just Right Book Activity ✨ Everyone had to take off one shoe and try on someone else’s. Sounds gross, but it was just for a quick second 😬 We then talked about how some shoes were too big and some were too small. If we were to go for a run, the only “perfect” shoe to wear would be our own because that’s what fits us. This is how our books are. When we read books that are too easy, it’s like wearing shoes that are too small. When we read books that are too hard, it’s like wearing shoes that are too big. Either way, we won’t benefit from it. The only way we can become a better reader (or runner) is by picking a book (or shoes) that are the perfect fit for us ❤️📚 •

NEW YEAR NEW GOALS 🍾
During our opening staff meeting yesterday, my principal shared this analogy:
Improvement : Excellence
Grape Juice : Champagne
She told us that while improvement at any level is always our goal, we should always be aiming high. I’m sure we’ve all heard it before, that one of the biggest components of student achievement is high expectations from teachers. I’m taking this as a personal challenge to aim for being the best teacher I can be. Better than last year is always my goal, but this is the Year of Ashley. I want to be the best version of myself! So let’s aim higher than grape juice this year. Let’s go for the bubbly 🍾
Inspirational messages on lap desks. My focus this year is on being a better writing teacher to my reluctant writers. ✏️
Today’s team building activity between my third & fourth graders: I read Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun and reminded the children it’s ok to think outside the box, get messy, be creative and to be YOU-nique! After our read aloud students were divided into four groups and given spaghetti noodles and marshmallows to build the highest tower. Loads of fun and so many ideas:)
Take the chance. ✨
A list of everything I never knew I needed:
A guy like Andrew. 💑💍 We are complete opposites. I’m an Enneagram 1... he’s a 7. I’m here for the structure & hard work... he’s here for the good time & minimal stress. I’m the emotional creative... he’s the logical intellectual. He breathes belief into me when I’m crippled by doubt... I give him vision and a plan when he gets complacent and stagnant. We push each other out of our comfort zones and encourage one another to grow every day.
A coaching community. 💪👯♀️ I got my degree in exercise science 6 years ago. I did my health & wellness coach training 3 years ago. I’ve had 3 different websites, several different instagrams, read dozens of business and personal development books, followed business coaches religiously, and yet... I’ve grown more in this last month since joining this business team than I have in years. Why? Because they force me to take ACTION, and they hold me accountable. The programs, the community, the business training, the amazing, like-minded, badass women... they were all things I ignored for years, until I leaned in and finalized realized it’s everything I’ve been looking for all along.
Personal development & self care. 🙌 Three years ago I had no idea this field of taking care of yourself, learning about yourself, and pushing yourself to grow outside of your comfort zone existed. I had been involved in a few different leadership programs in college, but the world of personal development was still very foreign to me. Little did I know that leaning into those “self help” books and those personality tests would be the best thing to ever happen to my mental health.
Maybe there’s something in your life that keeps pulling you back in. It keeps coming up, and you keep looking the other way because it scares you. I challenge you to stop ignoring it and LEAN IN instead. The universe keeps putting it in front of you for a reason. Take the chance... it’s probably going to change your whole damn life.
