I've worked with young people for over a decade, seen good practices and some pretty damaging ones too. At the moment my concern is that some mindfulness teaching in schools and with young people is causing more harm than helping. Why? Because by overemphasizing words such as "are you unhappy?" or "depressed" to a young child is very suggestive and I'd go as far as to say damaging. I've had parents say that their children have spent days saying they are unhappy after a session of Mindfulness. They are children, their minds are malleable. So I'm really pleased to be delivering the Mindfulness Approach to a few schools in September. It's a different approach to what's on offer at the moment and based on what I've learned from working with young people across the country. And of course my own experience as a parent and grandmother. I have a few slots left if you know a school or parent who might want to work with me to help their child become more resilient and better at managing their emotions. The advantage of having had quite a bit of rain come down these last few weeks was that there were plenty of rainbows to admire (that, and the plants got to enjoy some fooood). I was so happy to capture this double whammy! It required some photoshopping, but it came out so nice!   Rainbows remind me that beauty can be created in situations that may not feel that appealing. I mean, I've lived in Scotland long enough, but rain is still not my favorite! Is this a #spoonie thing?!? This is me 100% but also me is - having so much built up stress and anger from a regular work day I go home with my body literally writhing in pain because everytime I bury something and hide, my body tenses up, all that frustration surges through and hurts the body. That's so much unnecessary stress for your body and mind! A huge game changer for me is learning how to be assertive with my feelings before I'm angry and snap. Feel something, observe it and find a healthy way to express it right then and there, no festering!
