Have leather and other sexual fetishes lost their shock value? Have they become so visible that they’re almost mainstream now?..
When I came out in the late 1970s, just being gay was unacceptable, so the fringes of our community, including the leather and BDSM crowd, whenever they infrequently got publicity, were considered startling, bizarre, and even threatening to some. Those extreme parts of our community even made me uncomfortable when I was first exposed to them as a young conservative, uptight, Wall Streeter new to the gay community (there was no such thing as LGBTQ at that time).
When I finally attended the Folsom Street Leather Fair, the grand daddy of all such leather circuit events, for the first time in San Francisco in 2008, it had already become something of a public spectacle. The crowd of many thousands was probably half or more filled with straight gawkers. And, there certainly was nothing ominous or even startling about what attendees were able to witness..
I know that serious leather and BDSM adherents participate in activities that are as undiluted and committed as they were in the 1970s and 1980s. But, the circus that accompanies the public celebration of such activities seems to have robbed them of some of their outsider appeal..
For those interested in experiencing a bit of what this entails, albeit in a much more touristy way than when Folsom was first introduced in 1984, the fair will take place in San Francisco one week from today, on Sunday, September 2019..
Today’s pic is from the Folsom Street Fair in SF in 2008. The fellow in leather chaps and sunglasses is a gay male porn star whose name I forget (I was unaware of his profession when I snapped the photo.:), but I trust some enterprising viewer will be able to fill in that detail for us.:)..
