Hi everyone, I hope you’ll take the time to read this. Here is a photo of my beautiful Hawaiian friend, @puabrown
, who used to dance with me in ABT. Pua has brought the @protectmaunakea
movement to my attention and I want to share with you what I’ve learned:
Kiaʻi (protectors) have been blocking the Maunakea access road since July 13th to prevent the construction of a 30 meter, 5 acre, 18 story telescope atop their most sacred land and temple to the Sky Father, Wākea. Not only is the mountain inextricably tied to the Hawaiian creation story (their religion, culture, and belief system), it is a pristine environment and fragile ecosystem that has already shown documented signs of degradation as a result of the 13 smaller telescopes
- I am not against science (in fact very pro-science), but not at the cost of human rights and not on Maunakea - it is a matter of respect for the rightful stewards of that land. No means no.
I stand with the kiaʻi because I believe we must respect the wishes of Indigenous people around the world who are fighting to defend vital and sacred lands from corporate exploitation - from Standing Rock to Mauna Kea to the Amazon rainforest.
