A mystery object for you this Wednesday from Rare Books - any guesses? 🤔 Swipe left to unveil this beautiful work, which is in fact a Tibetan palm-leaf book containing a Buddhist text known as 'The Perfection of Wisdom in One Hundred Thousand Verses' (RARESEF 091 V72SD). The text was composed in India in the 8th century and described the rituals around confession of sins and broken tantric vows, both of which hinder the passage of a deceased person's consciousness towards rebirth. This copy was made in Tibet in the 16th century. 🖤🖤🖤
Palm leaves were one of the first writing surfaces used by humans, emerging around the 5th century BCE on the Indian subcontinent and in South-east Asia. The palm leaves were tried, flattened and treated with a preservative mixture, including aconite (wolfsbane, a poison - so no licking fingers to turn pages!!) used as an insect repellent. The pages were then prepared for writing and inscribed with text, in this case, in this case partly in gold 💫 The pages were not stitched together, but instead placed in a stack and encased in heavy wooden boards, carved with intricate decorations.
The Rare Books collection here is curated to tell a global story of the relationship between people and text, between writing and ideas, and between form and meaning. This wonderful book is in the Conservation lab for preparation for its display in our World of the Book exhibition from mid November - I hope you'll visit it in person! @bibliovita

More progress on my new block! I don't know about you guys, but for me carving the same object or pattern again and again can get kind of tiring after a while. I think that might just be the reason why I'm finding this new design so interesting - every detail in it is different and gives me room to play around. I'm particularly liking this flower here, and love carving those folksy little swirls and curls that you see in a lot of European folk art. But I must add that although I've been on a roll with this block for almost a week now, I think I need to take a break from it today because a) I need to prepare some other exciting stuff that I have coming your way this weekend, and b) because I wouldn't want to risk carving it on Friday the 13th 😜 Stay safe, everyone! ⛑

This is the kind of scrambled eggs I love the most.
Именно такую яичницу я люблю больше всего.
Love the crisp carving effect that @huskmilkpottery
gets with our carving tools!
