My teeth was really hurt by the braces adjustment. I slightly get fever and dont feel well that at the his frequent weekly visit, he cooks and brings this delicate healthy congee for me. I'm on day 4 of the Ration Challenge, living for a week on the same rations as a Syrian refugee in a camp in Jordan.
Turns out that's not very much at all - rice, plus small amounts of flour, oil, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans and a tin of sardines.
In an interesting twist, the organisers have linked self interest to fundraising. By hitting sponsorship targets I've been able to add a spice (chilli flakes), 170g of a vegetable (spring onions), 120g of protein & a few teabags, all of which make a massive difference.
Now I'm £74 away from adding 330ml of hot or cold drink, and fantasizing over the chance to make rice pudding and add milk to a cup of black tea.
The money raised goes on food, education and healthcare for refugees, plus Concern Worldwide UK's wider work combatting hunger and poverty. £70 would provide five school kits for refugee children to stay in education, £154 enough food rations for a refugee for a whole year.
The picture is my attempt at congee, the salted rice porridge enjoyed by millions of people in China every morning, though sadly not by me. I have never been so grateful that for me, this is only for a week. Yet for so many refugees, it's the harsh reality, year in year out.

on a rainy night was one of the best comfort food for me: congee! We came here early-ish (about 7pm) and there was no queue yet. The congee was okay, thinner than Crystal Jade's, but quite similar to Paradise's. I think the side dishes stole the show. The you tiao were cut too big, more suited for bak kut teh than congee, but these were one of the best you tiao I had! So crispy and yet substantial. The sizzling kai lan with whole garlic cloves was fragrant and crunchy. There was a queue when we left, so do come early for this.

Topped with soy sauce and chilli flakes to eat it. Nice and warming when it's colder!
It's also really nice for breakfast!
