Nettee and I are excited to share a new project with you! Starting tonight, we are reading Middlemarch by George Eliot on Instagram Live—one chapter a day. Why, you ask? Whenever I am having a difficult time, I always find solace in books. Books have an incredible power to bring us together, and I honestly think the world would be a much better place if everyone read Middlemarch. This will be my third reading—I read it first in my last year of college and then reread it a couple of years ago. The subtitle is “a story of provincial life,” and that’s what it is, on the surface, but it is so much more than that. The story is set in the 1830s, which is why Nettee is helping me read it to you, although George Eliot (the pseudonym of Marian Evans) wrote it in the 1870s. Despite it being written over 100 years ago, I think it’s incredibly relevant at this particular moment, when community is so important, and when it is very clear that the actions of one individual can affect the whole of society, in both negative and positive ways. We are all connected—that’s essentially what Middlemarch is about.
I actually wrote my Masters thesis on Middlemarch and George Eliot, so I could go on and on, but for now, I’ll spare you, and fervently hope you will join me on this journey. The prologue and first chapter are up and will be available for 24 hours. (I didn’t realize how awful the video quality was at the time, so my apologies for that!) Do you have a book you go back to and reread in difficult times? Let me know what it is in the comments.
