Make sure you catch up on our show before modest week’s episode posts at midnight! • We have fun here, and hope you, the listenerz, do too. We have some light, lovable fare for you this week. Sarah goes first with two shorter tales. She starts us off talking about the Harbor Chief, a nickname for an aggressive swan in Os, Norway. He’s known for passionately, albeit somewhat predatorily protecting the harbor of its small town. Once a mascot for many local businesses, the swan's role fluctuated between a charming sight and public nuisance. What to do with the would be assassin caused more than a little bit of controversy. Sarah’s second bit is about the English philosopher, Jeremy Bentham. It’s less about his life than the mysterious choices he made about his wishes in death. Hoping to become a self-proclaimed “auto icon,” Bentham wanted his body preserved in a very particular way. He kind of got his wishes? Stephanie rounds us out with the also true story of Mark Whitacre. The highest paid American executive turned whistleblower/FBI informant, Whitacre’s time with Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) was short before he began assisting with the investigation of the company’s price-fixing scheme. Though he was initially granted full immunity for his cooperation, that was overturned when Mark Whitacre’s own crimes came to light. He was the subject of the book The Informant!, as well as the subsequent movie starring Matt Damon. Whitacre’s story is bizarre, but entertaining and ultimately sheds light on many important American issues including corporate greed, mental health, and the journey towards forgiveness. If that doesn’t end on a note you like, just stick around for the Fetish Five to drop.
