Classic for this retrograde season, I went to visit a community that was a village for my family when I was growing up. There was a prominent family that opened up their home to various local organizations and schools, and their matriarch passed away this past week. It's interesting how your life can accumulate and you forget how and why certain things compound themselves and become cornerstones of your life.
The basement of their home was the space for the Pre-K Day Care that I attended starting at 3 yrs old. The teacher was very artistic and really cultivated our creativity and imagination. We would put on musical productions, reenact music videos and always would be performing.
About a decade later that same basement was the rehearsal space where my mom and I would teach and choreograph cultural dances for the folk group we were in. I also practiced the dances for my sweet sixteen cotillion there. It is that same house that this woman requested to be discharged to and take her final moments in.
At her service recounting how we first came to know the family, I realized that it was her home that she created, the atmosphere and energy that her aura built, that opened me to develop my talents right from the very beginning. I don't necessarily credit her as a mentor on my creative path, but it was her home that was a base for me to rely on to feel inspired, excited, creative and expressive. I developed some of the productions I am most proud of in the nurturing space she made. It made me think of my artistic beginnings and why I always had it in my heart to want to have an outlet for that and my need to always express it in some way. So I give her honor and gratitude not only for her love and generosity, but for today helping me remember my how and my why.
