The deadlift is a compound exercise that strengthens the muscles you use each day to bend and lift. Essentially, the deadlift is called the deadlift because it's meant to be a dead lift of weight from the floor (or wherever you're lifting the weight from.) It's usually called the deadlift because you're lifting an object that's dead on the ground with dead momentum. So essentially, you're lifting a dead weight. (Don't "bounce" the weight at the bottom, leave the bar on the ground for 2 seconds to ensure its "dead") Before attempting the deadlift ensure you are able to hinge at the hips, as this will ensure your back remains straight.
