Last week Thursday, F1’s Commercial MD Sean Bratches revealed that he is in talks with 2 African Nations about hosting a F1 GP on the 6th Continent with the aim of growing the sport globally;
1. Morocco 🇲🇦 - hosted the season finale of the 1958 season at the Ain - Diab Circuit, Casablanca. Champion Elect Mike Hawthorn was on pole but finished 2nd to a Mr Stirling Moss on race day. This was the only F1 race ever held there. However Formula E has the purpose made, street circuit in Marrakesh as their season opener. This is where the F1 GP would be if the North African country were to host it.
2. South Africa 🇿🇦 has a richer history embedded in F1, having hosted more than 30 F1 GP between 1934 and 1993 at 2 venues, namely:
2.1 Prince George Circuit in East London from 1934 - 1966
2.2 At the iconic Kyalami Circuit which was the season opener from 1967 - 1993, coincidentally Alain Prost, who went on to take his 4th title later that year also won the last South African GP, shadowed by his rookie teammate, Brit Damon Hill in the irrepressible FW15C, Renault powered Williams.
Liberty Media has taken a different direction to the Sport’s previous Commercial Owners from a Marketing and Brand positioning perspective by strategically removing the “invisible wall” of the otherwise elite, exclusive sport using Digital platforms.
The arrival of the first Black F1 Driver, not only for his relentless racing craft, but his social connections with other top sports personalities, Hollywood stars, musicians, premium fashion labels, red carpet events & viral Instagram account. He has promoted the sport in a way that resonates with African Market. As a South African I personally would like to see it come back here, but if it’s in Morocco that would please me too.
