Bethlehem Steel was in operation for more than a century and produced steel which was used in projects such as the GWB Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Empire State Building, Hoover Dam and the Waldorf Astoria. It is now the heart of SteelStacks, an arts and entertainment district in the city. The steel manufacturer closed in the 1990s after being in operation for more than 140 years.
I’ll hazard a guess that most of the swarms of cruise ship and resort tourists visiting Nassau don’t often walk up the hill into the old section. However this is where the magic of this pirate town can be found. Among the walled rabbit warrens of dead end streets and crooked alleyways are the crumbling remains of times the gone by. Some of these passages haven’t changed since the era of Woodes Rogers but most fight for existence among the rapid encroachment of industry. Next time you’re in this bustling city, take a detour down a side street and get lost in the past. I’d recommend doing it sooner than later while there’s still time. #nassau #bahamas #oldnassau #architecture #wabisabi #daysofold #colonial #monumentstothepast #islandliving #pirateslife #🇧🇸
