For a quick bite to eat on Monday night we went to Ukai, a Japanese gastropub on Portobello road.
Although it has many pub features, such as a bar and occasional live music, it is quite a cozy Japanese restaurant as well.
The food is definitely a step up from what you get in most gastropubs. In fact the Japanese food probably better than what you get in most Japanese restaurants around London as well.
We randomly selected a few dishes from quite an extensive the menu.
The sea bass tiradito in spicy citrus sauce (pic 1),more Japanese Peruvian fusion in all fairness, was probably the star dish of the day. Colorful, flavorful, fresh, really nice. Just like the pan fried scallops (pic 2) it was listed under the signature dishes, so we did expect both to be great, and they didn’t disappoint.
The roasted duck (pic 3) was a very generous portion of crispy duck. The duck was tasty but some bits of the meat were quite fatty which could perhaps have been rendered down a bit longer - further.
As we were in a Japanese restaurant we couldn’t leave without ordering some sushi so we got a dragon roll (pic 4) and a spider roll (pic 5) as well. Both were nice, but could have done with a little less sauce. Especially on the dragon roll it was overpowering the rest of the flavours.
All in all we were quite happy with our meal.
7.5/10 Only Japanese gastropub we found in London so far. Definitely worth a try. Definitely better than most Japanese restaurants.
