#tagateacher . Pre-school and primary school learning experiences about food can be heavily grounded in value-laden ideals like healthy and unhealthy. . “Nutritionism is a paradigm that assumes that it is the scientifically identified nutrients in foods that determine their value in the diet.” . Nutritionism has no place in educating young minds. See why I believe this by reading these few food education facts: . 🍊Children cannot see nutrition. They see food. . 🥙 Eat a variety, eat more/less, moderation and balance are abstract concepts. Children are concrete learners. They like to learn through their physical senses. . 🍩 Donuts are food. They’re not junk. Junk is something considered useless, rubbish or of little value. I’m sure many people have enjoyed a donut or two in their lifetime and didn’t feel like they were eating ‘junk’. 😊 . 🥗 Children don’t select food based on their ‘health benefits’. Their preferences are determined from their previous food experiences and exposures. . Teach children about food not nutrition. #foodeducation #childnutritionist . . . . . #healtheducation #primaryteacher #evidencebased #nutritioneducation #melbourne #foodeducation #healthyparents #healthyeating #teachersdownunder #peteacher #positiveparenting #intuitiveeating #teacherprofessionaldevelopment #foodeducationforkids #melbourneteachers #healthyfood #teachersofinstagram #learningisfun #learntoeat #nutritioneducator #teachingandlearning #pedagogy #iteach #ilearn #aussieteachers #teachershare
I have been a VERY busy girl!! 🤓 Getting my CEU’s done to renew my Nutrition Certification has opened some amazing new doors for me. #whoknew 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have 2 new Keto Kitchen workshops in place for May, a retreat is in the plans, and I’m working on a few speaking engagements for this summer. (Possibly a new photo shoot, too! 😎) 💪🏼👊🏼💥 Getting interviewed has been a HUGE boost to my business and I’m looking forward to seeing where these new roads take me. #staytuned . “My ambition is my weaponry, I’ll run this sh!t til the death of me.” 🎶: @niykeeheaton ♥️ . 📷: @dematophoto . . . #ambition #goalgetter #workingonme #focused #driven #alwayslearning #nutritioneducator #wellnesscoach #publicspeaker #motivationalspeaker #girlboss #bossbabe #empowerment #mindset #loveyourbody #loveyourself #beautyandbrains #thickchick #smartchick #fierce #teamtk #theweighitis
#teacherpd . Children learn about food through exposure: play at non-eating times, gardening, shopping and family meals to name a few. Children identify with the world through their senses. They don’t learn to like food or increase their intake of whole foods because someone does a mundane sorting activity identifying ‘everyday’ and ‘sometimes’ foods. This includes colouring worksheets, word finds, crosswords and question answer tasks. My personal summation of these kinds of activities here - they’re an absolute waste of time and you’re not utilising any kind of effective pedagogy. The BIG reality is that sometimes foods ARE everyday foods for some children. It’s not a teachers job to change that. Your role in teaching children about food is that different foods have different names, they change in shape, colour and texture when they’re cut or cooked, some foods can be packaged to preserve their shelf life, some need to be heated to enjoy, some are ground down ingredients. And that’s just to name a few! #childnutritionist . . . . . #healtheducation #primaryteacher #evidencebased #nutritioneducation #melbourne #foodeducation #healthyparents #healthyeating #teachersdownunder #peteacher #positiveparenting #intuitiveeating #teacherprofessionaldevelopment #foodeducationforkids #melbourneteachers #healthyfood #teachersofinstagram #learningisfun #learntoeat #nutritioneducator #teachingandlearning #pedagogy #iteach #ilearn #aussieteachers #teachershare #ipreview via @preview.app

I’ve spent the last two days in professional learning for Rethinking Learning and Teaching Environments (ReLATE) through the @mackillopfamilyservices. Our school looked at a Dr. Sandra Blooms Sanctuary Model and the neuroscience of trauma, wellbeing and learning systems. This quote from #zygotsky is so pertinent to all of the culture we’re immersed in. The culture that we follow on social media, the friends and families we interact with along with broader systematic and global culture. We decide as a community the kind of culture we want. #teachingandlearning . . . . . #problemsolving #criticalthinking #theworld #primaryteacher #lifelonglearning #culture #foodculture #nutritioneducator #melbourneteachers #nutritionist #teachersofinstagram #teachersdownunder #teacherprofessionaldevelopment #playtolearn #neuroscience #psychologyoflearning #cognition #memory #learningisfun #nutritioneducation #parenteducation #evidencebased #healtheducation #healthyeating #positiveparenting #educhat #peteacher #instaclassroom
Lev Vygotsky was a Russian psychologist that theorised the potential for cognitive development depends on the “zone of proximal development” (ZPD). This occurs when children are engaged in social behaviour. . The learning zone (ZPD) is where we want children to be slightly uncomfortable in their learning but also feeling supported and empowered. #zoneofproximaldevelopment #vygostsky . . . . . #teachingandlearning #problemsolving #criticalthinking #theworld #primaryteacher #lifelonglearning #nutritioneducator #melbourneteachers #nutritionist #teachersofinstagram #teachersdownunder #teacherprofessionaldevelopment #playtolearn #neuroscience #psychologyoflearning #cognition #memory #learningisfun #nutritioneducation #parenteducation #evidencebased #healtheducation #healthyeating #positiveparenting #educhat #peteacher #instaclassroom #parenting101
I advocate for an inquiry and inquisitive approach for health education in schools. We may be our own personal health expert for ourselves but when it comes to educating others we need to take a step back from our own beliefs and bias to help students develop skills and knowledge to navigate health information. When teachers ensure that learners have an opportunity to critically engage with health information rather than to simply be passive recipients of it, it enables students in a powerful way. #teachingandlearning . . . . . #powerofpedagogy #nutritionist #problemsolving #criticalthinking #theworld #primaryteacher #lifelonglearning #nutritioneducator #melbourneteachers #nutritionist #teachersofinstagram #teachersdownunder #teacherprofessionaldevelopment #playtolearn #neuroscience #psychologyoflearning #cognition #memory #learningisfun #nutritioneducation #parenteducation #evidencebased #healtheducation #healthyeating #positiveparenting #educhat #peteacher #instaclassroom #parenting101

How did you celebrate the Earth yesterday on #EarthDay ? Did you choose to #BeActiveOutside ? Follow the link in my bio for tips on how to continue to celebrate Earth Day, because honestly Earth Day should be everyday!
Happy Earth Day! 🌍Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day now includes events in more than 193 countries, which are coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network. #FunFact : Did you know Philadelphia was the only city to celebrate Earth Week in 1970? #nutritioneducator #nutrition #nutritioncoach #healthykidsfood #EarthDay 🌎
...💙🌎...Happy Earth Day!...🌎💚... I love sharing snippets of our planet's natural beauty with you and dreaming of a brighter healthier tomorrow where more people #EatFruitGrowFruit . What an amazingly beautiful, complex, mysterious, fascinating, resilient, abundant and ever evolving planet we inhabit! Not even Hollywood can imagine a more perfect home for humans and all the wonders of Creation we share our beautiful spaceship Earth with. With so many creative intelligent minds on Earth now we should be able to do better - to move from envisioning ultimate destruction, as in so many popular novels and films of my lifetime, to something a bit more bright. I envision us shifting from a human family that engages in unconscious destructive activities that deplete our planet's natural resources, to one focused on consciously growing and building a better future for our children and the next #sevengenerations . What would this future Earth look like? I imagine a lot of trees planted in this process, especially the fruiting varieties that nourish us frugivores while cleaning the air and ground and making our homes more beautiful. I'd love to see a more positive future for our human family portrayed on the screen and in the media to help inspire us to grow the future of our dreams. Thank you for allowing me to share my Earth day 2019 musings. (Pic is recycled from Earth day a few years ago when I created this collage). 🐿️☀️🌎🌱💙🌳🌼🐇🍇🍈🦁🐫🍐🐘🐧🍓🦇🐎🍍🐒🐆🦔🦃🍏🐢🐧🐊🍊🦅🐠🐬🐍🥕🦋🐙💃🐂🙏🌈#idreamingreen #smallplanet #earthling #hopeforthefuture #positivefuture #allcreaturesgreatandsmall #hope #pray #act #hopefortheflowers #earthday #writersofig #happyearthday
..🌼🌼🥑Beautiful Avocado Blossoms🥑🌼🌼.. I just enjoyed some avocado on bread, a regular feature of many of my mornings. One of my staple foods, the avocado, starts as a small blossom just like these on this giant avocado tree in the community garden where I work. I know there's a lot of other avocado enthusiasts out there who might appreciate seeing this close up of the flowers which transform into the creamy green fruits that are so adored. Creation never ceases to amaze me - all of the unique designs that work amazingly to foster and support continual life, growth, and renewal. And for some extra avocado appreciation --- This is from University of California on what makes the avocado flower so unique: "The first or female stage remains open for only 2 or 3 hours. The flower then closes and remains closed the rest of the day and that night. The following day it opens again. But now the stigma will no longer receive pollen. Instead, the flower is now shedding pollen. That is, each flower is female at its first opening, male at its second. After being open several hours the second day, the flower closes again, this time for good. If it had been successfully pollinated at the first opening, and if other conditions are right, it will develop into a delicious fruit. "A" and "B" type flowers Nature has provided for avocado cross-pollination by creating varieties of two kinds. The "A" type is female in the morning of the first day and male in the afternoon of the second day (when the weather is warm). The "B" type is just the reverse: its flowers are female in the afternoon and male the following morning." Wow! I'm in awe of the #amazingavocado 🌱🌳🌼🌼🌼🌼🥑🥑🥑🥑🥑🥑🧡#FrugivoreDiet #EatFruitGrowFruit #educationgarden #NutritionEducator #plantbased #avocadotree #blossoming #naturetherapy #plantmedicine #flowerstofruit
