The SFVHS will host a free Memorial Day Observance at the historic Pioneer Cemetery.
This is the second oldest graveyard in the San Fernando Valley and contains the remains of local residents, immigrants, and five civil war veterans. The observance will include a wreath laying ceremony, U.S. flag-raising, rifle salute, and "Taps". Gates open at 10 a.m. #sfvhs #sanfernandovalley #sylmar #pioneercemetery #sfv #thevalley #memorialdayweekend

The opposite of color
One of many giant oak trees at Rochester cemetery. Set aside well before the civil war, it has never been plowed and hosts a prairie/oak savanna remnant. I can only hope to be laid to rest under a sea of wildflowers, the outstretched limbs of majestic trees, and the sky so big.

Memorial Day is fast approaching, and as we have done in the past Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery will be on site at Lone Fir cemetery to help answer people’s questions and assist in locating loved ones.
For some Memorial Day is a time for reflection, to give thanks to the veterans who served our country, to visit family members and friends that have passed and for Friends of Lone Fir it is also a time to volunteer.
We will be stationed by Chestnut Grove and we will be there from 10:00-3:00 May 26 and 27. Sunday and Monday this year.
If you are interested in volunteering please reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org

a little rhyme ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🕯 A pair of nearly identical headstones at the beautiful Pioneer Cemetery in Terrace, BC. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They mark the final resting place of two men (both under the age of 30) - out of five fatalities all total - who tragically perished in an explosion at the Grand Trunk Pacific Tunnel near Kitselas in 1911. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
May they forever RIP. 🕯 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Pioneer cemeteries 💀⚰️ are an actual treasure hunt of historical stories; sometimes those stories are lost to us, like the faded ❌ on a treasure map. Sometimes others are just hidden behind a bush, with an epitaph carved into wood just waiting be reread aloud. This one from the tombstone of John E. Mulconery I found particularly beautiful; "Gone where the Woodbine twineth... Melted into the substance... of which dreams are made." 💀⚰️
