Spent a good part of the day on Saturday trekking around the foothills of the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains and up, up, up to the Whitney Portal (elevation 8374ft). Stunningly beautiful with the peaceful sound of snow melt rushing over the rocks and boulders in the Lone Pine Creek. 12 miles into my #wildwildwestultra
it was the perfect place to have my #secondbreakfast
and bust out my #gofood
fueling choice @sasquatchfuel.
Replenished and re-energized I had the best time running down the mountain singing cheesy songs, feeling strong and focused on accomplishing my goal of completing my race distance of 50 miles. I was still feeling great around mile 20 and so grateful for my ice filled @polarhugusa
wrapped around my neck. The trail at this point was a fully exposed sandy road that wrapped around the boulders and rock formations of the Alabama Hills. Super cool but the day was getting toasty. By mile 24, my not healed knee cap from a recent hard fall/face plant was having #noneofit
. There was no more run in my race. I spent the next several miles walking, debating with myself, talking to my knee, and enjoying the scenery. I decided on dropping down to the 50k distance as there was nothing remotely enticing about spending hours and hours walking in the heat of the day for another 20 miles. Hell no. Decision made yay! Then I promptly got lost when I missed that ribbon. Took a little adventurous side trip down a boulder strewn dry sandy creek bed. After awhile with no hint of a pink ribbon anywhere and a sense that this seem like a big insurance liability risk for participants if it was in fact the trail, I turned around and retraced my steps. No problem just add that extra being lost mile to my day 🤭 here’s the thing you always seem to end up right where you need to be. I caught back up to a runner who I had passed earlier in the day. We had a lovely time chatting and walking together the final miles of the race. Thank you Emmett!!! A bit of a fugly finish but another 50k done :) #woohoo
