🤼‍♂️🥋 Shoulder Strength and Injury Prevention ℹ️ The internal rotators of your shoulder are an important component of the rotator cuff. ℹ️ In BJJ and grappling sports, we are consistently trying to control another dynamic and unpredictable object, mostly with our arms. ℹ️ Improving strength and control of the rotator cuff and shoulder can help to prevent injury, especially when our arm gets over extended or isolated when grappling. . 💪🏽 This is an example of one of my favorite exercises in the rotator cuff strength program I created for grapplers. 🔥🔥🔥 It focuses on stability and strength of the internal rotators through a full pressing motion. . ✅✅✅ Use an exercise band and attach it to something sturdy. . ✅ Pull the arm towards you and keep your elbow tucked in. . ✅ Control the position as you press your arm out straight and bring it back to the same starting position. . ✅ 8 reps each arm as part of the circuit for the week. 🔻🔻🔻 Interested in learning more? In this video, Natalie is completing a chest press with added shoulder flexion to challenge the stabilising function of her rotator cuff muscles through movement. The theraband and the 2 kg weight act as a perturbation, i.e. disturbance, to Natalie’s shoulder stability at different points in range. For the most part, the shoulder becomes vulnerable with above shoulder movements under load. Natalie has been prescribed 3 sets of 10 reps for homework, with a slight 2-3 second pause at the top of her chest press and at maximum shoulder flexion (pain free range). . . Over the next week, Heather (physiotherapist at our Chan Gunn) will offer some simple tips on shoulder rehab. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ A dynamic warm up is key before engaging in activity. The band separation drill is a great addition to any upper body warm up. It helps activate muscles from the shoulder blade down to the hand.⠀⠀ These exercises can be done laying on the ground, or standing with the back against a wall. ⠀⠀ - Start with the arms shoulder width apart holding onto a light to medium resistance band. ⠀⠀ - Separate the band, emphasizing smooth, slow and controlled motion. ⠀⠀ - Move the band to start at different points of the body to bias different muscle groups. ⠀⠀ - Heather recommends using the forehead, shoulder and bottom of the ribs as three target areas.⠀⠀ - Incorporating transition motions between different zones is also helpful. Separate the band at the forehead, keep tension on the band as you slowly and smoothly move it down towards the bottom of the ribs. Ring Row . Another classic exercise that can be used as corrective exercise! It's something many trainers and gyms utilize within workouts. But again, when fatigued we often see people lose core stability or elevate their shoulders as they pull. . Get set up in a strong pulling position. This means, tuck the tailbone and engage your core & pull your shoulder blades back and down. Pull to this position AND return to this position. Rest when you start to compensate! . Compensation is merely feedback. It's time to rest and regain focus on your movement pattern.

⚠️ROTATOR CUFF⚠️ ⁣— 👉🏼In order to prevent injury and maximize function and performance, the shoulder joint has to provide enough stability while maintaining full mobility ⁣— 👉🏼The four muscles of the rotator cuff and their tendons act to stabilize and rotate the shoulder joint. These muscles are the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis. They function to hold the head of the humerus in the shoulder capsule (glenoid cavity) during movement⁣ ⁣ ⁣— 👉🏼Progressively loading these muscles and tendons helps to reduce pain and improve function. So it's important to learn how to effectively perform resisted shoulder external rotation — ⚠️IN TERMS OF A “WARMUP” FOR THE ROTATOR CUFF/SHOULDER⚠️ — 👉🏼Lots of people will do some kind of rotator cuff warm up before a chest day or a shoulder day, but how often do you see people just pick up dumbbells and start doing what I’m demonstrating in the top video? The answer is TOO OFTEN‼️ ⁣— 👉🏼Using DBs doesn’t provide resistance to target the rotator cuff efficiently.
