This weekend my 50 years of Gap cover story drops in Style. Love these very Verner Panton inspired murals taken from Harry Murphy’s original logo on the first Gap store in the El Rey Theater building on Ocean Ave. . . . #thegap #intothegap #sfstyle #fashionhistory #sanfranciscohistory

Original Posters by Louis Siegriest. A commercial artist and fine-art painter, Louis Siegriest had a long, distinguished career including association in the 1920s with the California Bay Area group, the Society of Six.  In 1939 he designed these posters for The Indian Court Federal Building at the Golden Gate International Exposition. #goldengateinternationalexposition #sanfrancisco1939 #louissiegriest #1930sdesign #posterdesign #posterart #vintagedesign #vintageposters #californiahistory #sanfranciscohistory #bookstore #montecito #santabarbarastyle #sanysidroranch #rosewoodmiramarbeach #fourseasonsbiltmoresantabarbara

today’s archiving/digitizing tasks as we work through capturing the Neighborhood Newspapers of San Francisco here at the Internet Archive (thank you @internetarchive !!). From a collection going back to 1959, the St. Mary’s Park Bell, here an issue from 1996. And we are into 2009 with the Noe Valley Voice issues, which shows the cost of living in Noe Valley 10 years ago. @shapingsf #shapingsf #historyisacreativeactinthepresent #sfhistory #sf #sanfrancisco #sanfranciscohistory #knowyourcityshistory #knowyourcity #sfneighborhoods #sanfrancisconeighborhoods #neighborhoodnewspapers #communitynewspapers @iabooksglobal @indyartssf #digitizinghistory #digitization #archivalwork #stmarysparksf #noevalley #noevalleyvoice
San Francisco is America’s perennial boomtown, and the Mission District is the heart of San Francisco. This week on #TheTripPodcast , we’re kicking off a deep dive into the San Francisco that still belongs to the locals with artist, activist, and historian of the Mission Vero Majano. Tune in to discover the Mission’s history of resistance, the SF's many changes and conflicts, and whether artists can still survive in a city of new multi-millionaires and scooters. . Had the pleasure of working on a documentary about the history of SF’s very own Market Street (called 5 Blocks)! It was fascinating to learn just how this main artery has evolved over the years and how it currently inhabits so many different communities. Lots of fun archival sound design on this one! Looking forward to it’s completion. 😊. . . . . #sffilm #bayareafilmmakers #indiedocumentary #indiefilm #sanfranciscohistory #marketstreet #recordingstudios #videographers #indiedirector

One of the many things I love about #SanFrancisco are the parks! And smack in the of the best one (#GoldenGatePark ) is the Japanese Tea Garden. It’s rich in history, colors, scents, art and the feeling is very calm and peaceful. This structure is called the Drum Bridge and was built in Japan for the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894. Come and visit! • A taiko bashi, or drum bridge is a highly arched pedestrian bridge found in Chinese and Japanese gardens. It is thus named because when reflected on the water, the full circle shape it creates resembles a drum. This design is also referred to as a Moon bridge. Today a bronze plaque at the bridge "recognizes the dedication and expertise of Shinshichi Nakatani for his unique contribution to the City and to the charm of the Japanese Tea Garden." The bridge's Japanese design, which was adapted from the Chinese, has 3 main functions: to slow people down, to let barges on the canal go smoothly under the bridge, and to reflect a full circle on the water resembling a drum. • #sanfranciscohistory #lularoenicole #lularoe @lularoe #lularoeretailer #fashionisfun #momstyle #shoplocal #smallbusiness #styletips #lifeisgood #instafashion #momboss #citymom #outfits #sanfranciscosmallbusiness #happygoodthings #japaneseteagarden #ggpark #touristinmyowncity
My great-grandmother’s cousin Emma Abbott- one of the great mid 19th century opera divas! How much do I love having her San Francisco promotional posters in the studio?! My grandfather gave me all the postcards and pasteboard placards the family had collected when she came to SF in the 1880’s. There are no recordings of her as she died in 1891. But I can imagine! Grandpa used to call me “Mr. Abbott” when I’d get overly dramatic. #ancestors #opera #divas #victorians #19thcentury #sanfranciscohistory #musichistory
In the 1880s and 1890s, San Franciscans found their thrill on Telegraph Hill at the Observatory, an amusement park overlooking San Francisco Bay. This rare bird’s-eye view, issued in 1883, features the castle-like building with its crenelated towers and conical turrets, and shows pedestrians and horse drawn carriages on the grounds. Visitors took a cable car there to eat at its bars and restaurants, and watch concerts, theatrical performances and an assortment of sporting events from broadsword contests on horseback held in front of the castle to wrestling matches on the indoor stage. After a fire, the building was demolished in 1903 and has been replaced by Coit Tower. This is one of our current sale items, along with the Selby ducks we posted a few days ago! Tiny Lou no. 73 (Loma Prieta Earthquake)⁣ from @glbt_history Lou Sullivan Papers. ⁣ 〰〰〰〰⁣ From FTM Newsletter: "Thanks to everyone who contacted us, concerned about our survival of the October 17, 1989 earthquake in San Francisco. We were extremely fortunate: one drinking glass fell off the desk and broke, there is some cracked paint on the walls, and we were without electricity for 48 hours, but that was the extend of our damage. All is well at FTM and we proceed as usual!" 〰〰〰〰⁣ 〰〰〰〰⁣ #lousullivan #sanfranciscohistory #lgbtqhistory #aidshistory #queer #lgbtq #trans #gay #visitinglou
🗿Threw on my @tiki_bar_tshirt_club shirt to go visit the old site of Tiki Bob's, an SF Tiki institution. Bob still remains in a full state but the space is now a cafe and coffee shop. Here's a couple of vintage photos of the site, the menu, and a bonus picture of Bob's second location on Bush St that is now the site of @paganidolsf.
On this day in 2008 @officialandrenickatina and Mac Dre released A Tale of Two Andres
“Remember Los Siete is the last project I did. It was a live cinema production. This year is the 50-year anniversary of the Los Siete Movement, Los Siete de la Raza: In 1969, seven young Central American young men were accused of killing a white police officer in the Mission District. They were acquitted. It took almost two years for them to get acquitted, but a lot of movements in the Mission were created out of that—trying to free Los Siete, and a collaboration with the Black Panthers.” . San Francisco is America’s perennial boomtown, and the Mission District is the heart of San Francisco. The newcomers forget every time that this was a mestizo city from the start, that the Latino immigrants who find safe harbor in the Mission are part of a much older bloodline. . We’re kicking off The Trip’s dive into San Francisco with Vero Majano [@gordofacesf ]—a queer Latina visual artist and activist born and raised in the Mission, who uses film, performance, archival footage, and storytelling to share the Mission’s Latino history with broader audiences. This IPA-fueled conversation is a love letter to the Mission’s history as an epicenter for social movements and resistance, a reflection of change and conflict in the city—and an insight into what it’s like to be an artist and a Mission local when the economy is coming for both. .
