Lets talk supplements! Long post warning... Rapid fire question and (my) answer: . DO YOU NEED TO TAKE SUPPLEMENTS: . Absolutely not. You can make great progress in the gym without supplements, they are completely unnecessary (unless used for health conditions). . WHAT IS A BCAA? . Branched-Chain Amino Acid... leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These amino acids help with muscle growth.. however, protein is digested and breaks down into amino acids. So, if you get enough protein bcaa's are pretty much useless. I like to use them before a workout as a "preworkout" especially if I haven't eaten in a while. . WHAT DO I SUGGEST TAKING? . For beginner lifters, and even most advanced athletes, protein is really the only supplement worth taking (in my opinion). Spending a ton of money on supplements can be a huge waste, especially if you eat well. Beyond protein, bcaa's can be used, and some people do okay with creatine. I also take a multivitamin 😁 . WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I TRIED USING CREATINE? . For those that don't know, creatine is naturally produced by the body, and helps with the formation of ATP, which is used for energy, which in turn helps build muscle. Creatine is one of the most widely used and researched supplements, and is generally accepted as safe when used properly. With my basic understanding, creatine causes muscles to draw more water. When I tried taking it for a while, it seemed like I couldn't drink enough water, and started getting dry mouth every time I played basketball or lifted. So I stopped. I would definitely say creatine is not necessary and shouldn't be used if you are only beggining to workout. . . WHAT IS PREWORKOUT? . Unneccessary, and sometimes dangerous when not used properly. Just make sure to research your particular brand and ingredients. . The International Society of Sports Nutrition throwing heat. There’s a lot to read so I won’t really add to it but I do want to make note their estimate for protein based on fat free mass is 2.3-3.1 which was very close to mine 😏 I stated training 2-4 days per week you should eat 2g/kg, 5-6 days per week 2.5g/kg, 6-7 days per week 2.7g/kg, and enhanced athletes 3g/kg of lean mass.
