Nestled at 10,760 ft above sea level is Tabo, housing the oldest functioning monastery of India. The 'Ajanta of Himalayas' houses some of the most important Vajrayana murals of Buddhism in the desolated alpine desert region of Spiti valley.
It acted as a pitstop for my journey to Kaza but I was amazed by the cultural heritage the place holds. I decided to stay at the monastery and woke up without an alarm ( in a long, long time) to an amazing view( first image is the view from the dormitory window).
As I stepped out I noticed people coming to the monastery to offer their morning prayers and the monks carrying out their daily rituals. gSer- Khang( Golden Temple) is a part of this monastery and is believed to have been once covered with gold as thick as a Yak's skin, the remains of which can be seen on the walls and the door( second image).
The newly built Stupa houses prayer wheels across it's four sides as the mountains overlook it( third image), promising to preserve this place for years to come.
