239 Abiso Avenue. The former location of the Toilet Seat Art Museum. When we Googled the status of this place, we learned that the owner and creator, Barney Smith had just died the day before. Rest In Peace.▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️ “One of San Antonio's most beloved and quirky curators has passed away. Barney Smith, owner, creator and collector of the Toilet Seat Art Museum died Tuesday at 98, his family shared on a Facebook page dedicated to the world-famous attraction of rows and rows of decorated commode lids. Back in 2017, Smith, a former master plumber, told the Express-News he started his collection — one that would eventually surpass 1,000 commode covers — by just adding a few embellishments like antlers. He'd sometimes stay up until 4 a.m., turning the seats into ornate pieces of art. Eventually fans and friends started sharing pieces of history for Smith to add to his covers like pieces of the Berlin Wall, barbed wire from Auschwitz, Saddam Hussein's toilet and NASA's space shuttle Challenger. The family decided to put the museum up for auction in 2017 and was purchased by Texas Truck Yard Owner Jason Boso to be featured at The Colony, just north of Dallas. The relocated museum opened to the public in June and Smith was "overjoyed," according to the Facebook page.” 🚽🚽🚽 https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/history-culture/amp/San-Antonio-s-Toilet-Seat-Art-Museum-owner-Barney-14119339.php #toiletseatartmuseum #sanantonio #barneysmith
BARNEY SMITH 1921—2019 . This is my friend Barney Smith, one of the most inspiring makers I've known. He created the Toilet Seat Art Museum in his garage in San Antonio, which featured the wonderfully unusual works of art he created over the last several decades. We met back when I featured him in my first book. . He recently sold the collection, about 1400 pieces in all, to be relocated to a new, dedicated museum north of Dallas. Here we are together at the museum's dedication in June, me holding the copy of my book I signed for him in 2005 (now in the museum's library), him holding the book about his museum he had just signed for me. Barney passed away yesterday at the age of 98. He is greatly missed. . #barneysmithstoiletseatartmuseum #toiletseatartmuseum #barneysmith #roadsideattractions #weirdus #roadsideamerica #sanantonio #make #maker #maker #folkartists #makersgonnamake
Barney Smith, the artist and retired master plumber behind the beloved Toilet Seat Art Museum in Alamo Heights, passed away on Tuesday, according to his family. He was 98 and will be greatly missed. These photos by @joshhuskin were shot for an interview with Mr. Smith in 2015. Visit the link in our profile to hear what he had to say then about the inspiration behind his art. #barneysmith #toiletseatartmuseum
Barney. Friend 2 of yesterday's trio of social outings. Barney has been a big part of my San Antonio life and this 98 year artist has taught me a thing or two and has the best humor.. We were working on making some sign in sheets for his upcoming GRAND OPENING of the new home for his life work up in The Colony near Dallas next Saturday. We're going up to see his #toiletseatart in the new digs -- an Ice House/Entertainment venue/Roadside attraction The Truck Yard. #barneysmith #santantonioartist #toiletseatartmuseum #friendvisit
This month San Antonio lost a museum. . The Barney Smith's Toilet Seat Art Museum is now closed and there will be no more appointments or tours here in San Antonio. . All the original art and exhibits made by former plumber and artist 97-year-old (turning 98 in May) Barney Smith has been enjoyed by so many over the years. San Antonio lost big by not stepping up to keep the art local when Barney announced he was now too old to run the museum. (I tried: wrote letters to all the art, history, city people, talked to news media to everyone and anyone. A lost cause unfortunately. SA is interested in other things right now) Instead Dallas (specifically The Colony) wins! They are moving the Toilet Seat Art Museum to the Truck Yard The Colony very soon and will start a new roadside attraction. I am glad the museum/art will be still in Texas. Barney hopes to go to the opening. . I've been volunteering at the museum for 2.5 years and have met so many people from around the world who have made the trek to San Antonio to see it! In fact two women from Germany stopped by yesterday while I was photographing the collection and sadly they didn't get to see the museum, just the museum in boxes. But Jason Bye and I did give them some hot tips of what to do in San Antonio but nothing will be as amazing and special as Barney Smith's Toilet Seat Art Museum. Sorry for those of you who never got to see it. It was a treasure and a big reason why I moved to San Antonio. . Barney is doing fine by the way.. he's getting ready for his Ceramics sale!!

55 Boxes of Toilet Seat Art packed so far! Barney's Toilet Seat Art Museum will be moving on come February. Montel. Today at the museum (Barney Smith's Toilet Seat Art Museum) I enjoyed being sentimental and was snapping some pics of some of the hidden nooks and crannies. This photo is hidden behind Barney's wall of TV Show/Media appearances and museum filming seat exhibits. Barney actually made Montel a special toilet seat he could keep. @montel_williams
We love Barney Smith!  He's in good spirits as he works on packing up his art... look at all the space! I think around 200+ seats are now packed out of the 1400+. . . Barney's Toilet Seat Art Museum has delighted people from all over the world. I honestly don't know if I would have moved to San Antonio if it wasn't for the fateful day in August 2014 when I spent several hours in Barney's garage museum in Alamo Heights.. A museum Barney has personally been showing  for over 25 years to travelers, locals, families churches, preschools, scouts, walking groups, Red Hat societies, colleges, rehabilitation centers, news media, reporters, TV programs, artists, a few celebrities, and anyone willing to call to make an appointment. ///////// Barney and I are definitely kindred spirits and I've been very lucky to have been able to move to San Antonio and work with him so closely. And while that work isn't done quite yet (The Museum is still open a little longer), it is coming to a close and  it won't be too long before this magical place hidden in plain sight in Alamo Heights returns to .... just being a garage.
Speaking of priceless pieces of Americana, I just finally sat down with ( not on the toilet) "King of the Commode - Barney Smith & His Toilet Seat Art Museum" this morning by @cattywampuspress and it warmed my soul. What an incredible guy. It's hard not to overshare so many amazing images- y'all should really go buy the book. #barneysmith #toiletseatartmuseum #americana #americanfolkart
Going Going... gone. Barney is shipping his famous Toilet Seat Art Museum off to Eastland, Texas (his birthplace). He's got 17 boxes ready so far, about 140+ seats packed!  Always a reuser, he finds banana boxes just perfect for 7 or 8 seats that don't have too much 3D art. /////////////// San Antonio art community wasn't interested in Barney's Art so I'm glad his home town is!  Eastland's big win, San Antonio's big loss. . //////////// San Antonio which has been a destination for world travelers and local curious seeker will have one less treasure since Barney's art and legacy will head off to another part of Texas. Barney will stay here in SA, TX (Alamo Heights) until he goes off as he says to meet his wife Velma who passed away about 4 years ago #toiletseatart #toiletseatartist #toiletseatmuseum #toiletseatartmuseum #barneysmith #artist #sanantonoartist #alamoheights #eastlandtexas #satx #sanantonio #outsiderartist #worldfamous #texasicon #sanantonioicon #museum #weirdart #garagemuseum #couldawouldashouda #sadforsanantonio #sanantonioarts #artssananantonio #artmuseum #contemporaryart #contemporararyartist #losingamuseum #museumnews #artistnews #elderartist #friendsofbes
Boxes with things: by Barney Smith There are 100s of these categorized shoeboxes in Barney Smith's garage, which is also the Toilet Seat Art Museum. I'm surprised I haven't opened more up to see what's inside. The randomness of topics seems to be fun enough. I've been volunteering in Barney's Museum for two years now! My photo/video collection of this amazing place grows weekly! #barneysmith #barneysmithtoiletseatartmuseum #toiletseatartmuseum #alamoheights #sanantonio #weirdmuseum #offbeatart #outsiderart #creative #collections #boxes #thingsinboxes #categories #keepingthingsneat #organized #museum #artmuseum #museumassistant
Happy birthday Barney Smith! Thank you for finding art in everything around you. Congratulations on the book release! #toiletseatartmuseum
Here's me at Barney's : hot, sweaty and tired! (In his workroom trying to hide and rest.) I knew with Jason out of town I'd have to do 'all the yard things' today because Barney's big book release party is tomorrow and it is also his Birthday today. I can't believe I can't keep up with a 97 year old. That guy doesn't every break a sweat. He's as Texas as they come! #barneysmith #barneysmithtoiletseatartmuseum #toiletseatartmuseum #museumhelper #museumassistant #museumgrunt #smallmuseum #alamoheights #breakingasweat #caryebye #texas
