Literally everything gets easier when we stop resisting it. It takes more energy to resist being in a pose than it takes to just be there without the attachment. Chair twist is a perfect example for me. Every time I’m in chair twist, I want out. How much I want to get out is all I can think about (🤷🏻‍♀️I’m human, it‘s part of the deal!). We all have THAT pose for ourselves, the one we dread. I’m trying to remind myself to redirect my attention there each time. Staying aware with self compassion and nonattachment is so much more comfortable than convincing yourself why you can’t. I’m a work in progress every day still. Feet are hips width apart or big toes touching, make sure your toes are pointing directly forward 2. Sit the hips back behind you, like you were sitting in an invisible chair. Squeeze the inner thighs together 3. Put most of your weight in your heels, keep your knees behind your toes 4. Lengthen your tailbone down, avoiding rounding or overarching the low back 5. Draw the abs up and in. Lengthen through the sides of the waist 6. Reach the arms energetically up. Firm the biceps toward each other. Shoulder blades in neutral on the back, shoulders away from the ears 7. #movementmonday This month in my Vinyasa classes, we’re working on strength and strength means repetition-30 seconds of continuous movement, that is. In this video I show two variations that you can add to help strengthen specific areas in your body. Movement 1: Salambhasana for back strength What to do: In this variation, I’ve enjoyed the wide arm version which allows opening of the chest and encourages using the paraspinal muscles-the action muscles of the back. Instead of vinyasa, switch one or two out for 30 seconds of this movement to support the back. Note: adding the legs may be too much to bring with so feel free to try this variation with your feet rooting into the mat. 👍 Modification 2: Utkatasana —> Virabhadrasana 3 What to do: Want to know where your gluteus medius is and how strong/weak it is?!?! Here is the movement for you. Instagram vs. Reality || Don’t be fooled! It took me several tries to get into and even just briefly stay in this unassuming little balancing posture. The wind was crazy and the waves were out of control yesterday. I could not stay on my foot for the life of me, getting knocked over at least a dozen times. After a while I was cracking up, my kids were cracking up (before they got bored with my yoga shenanigans of course) and I’m confident I provided some decent entertainment to at least a couple of people on the beach. Ocean-1, me-0 😂🤣. You better believe we will be practicing this #utkatasana variation in class this week.
