This week I was the co-star on Grey’s Anatomy.. not!
Life can take a turn and so it did this week. Monday I started to feel a sore throat coming and by Tuesday I was in bed with a fewer. Trying to wait hit out I did some classic home cures like the salt-water-gurgle, Lemon water and a at one point I even put a garlic in my ear. One side of the throat got better but one seemed to be getting worse.
On the fourth day I woke up not able to swallow and the pain had spread throw the right side of the face. I knew something was wrong so we left for the local urgent care.
It turned up to be worse then a sore throat and the doctor wanted to send me to a specialist. I got scared that the travel insurance I had was not going to cover it, so I asked if we could just wait it out? - No this is a emergency, you need to see someone today! He said and arranged for us to arrive at a bigger hospital in Jackson, WY.
2h later it turned out I had a Peritonsillar Abscess, a pocket of bacteria growing behind my tonsils to the size of a plum. After poking me a couple of times trying to find it, they did a CAT scan to secure its location(never done that before, interesting!). Then they gave me a lot of heavy painkillers and drained it.
My doctor, that actually spoke Swedish(!), explained that it’s very rare and it’s like a strep throat just that it’s all growing in one place, like a pocket of strep. If I would have waited it out and not come in the risk would have been that it could have blocked my airways, because of the speed it was growing in.
But it’s all over now, I’m back resting in bed and I can close my jaw again! So happy that my travel insurance will cover all of this so I can continue my journey. And so happy it al went well and that I had some support from new amazing people.
And if anyone has medical issues in the area, ST. Johns Medical Center in Jackson is the place. Wonderful staff that took great care of me, 5 stars! .
