TRANSITION This is the term we teachers like to use when talking about children moving up to a new year group. For some children, it can be a worrying time- a new classroom, new teacher, new timetable, new playground, maybe even new pupils...it’s all on the horizon and we all struggle a bit with change. In the folk traditions of Guatemala, children are meant to tell a worry to each worry doll before they go to bed. In the morning, the children wake up and their worries are gone because the dolls have removed them. 👫👫👫👫👫👫👫👫👫👫👫 Ah these little dudes got me though some of my worries when I was younger. We were not designed to be anxious or nervous. However, at some point, all of us have worried about the basics of life. . ♀️ Most of our anxieties involve fundamental things like where we live, what food we buy, what clothes to wear, what friends we have, and what others think about us. . ♀️ If you assume that you are the one who is completely in charge, then you will battle anxiety and fear. Have you ever watched a mouse running inside a wheel? The faster he runs, the faster the wheel moves, but he doesn't make the slightest progress. He does not even have the sense to get off the wheel. This is exactly what anxiety does to you. As fearful thoughts fill your mind, you begin to run faster, trying harder to meet the demands of others or to prevent an uncertain disaster. You never gain complete control of your circumstances because you're not in control of ALL things. . ♀️ So do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will care for itself. Thought I’d share this after reading an article about how toxic parents are creating anxiety in our young people. . Our young people are doing well academically but not so well psychologically. Getting good grades is no good without confidence and resilience to pursue ambitions and dreams. . Do you live with someone with anxiety? Or have friends struggling with any of these symptoms? Anxiety can feel scary. It's natural to want to resist it because it is so uncomfortable. But the more we resist, the more it persists. And becomes a painful cycle. Resisting can lead to judgment, which basically means we are being really hard on ourselves. Being hard on ourselves puts pressure on us to get over it. And when we can't get over it (because we haven't paid attention to why it is there in the first place), we become trapped in a loop of worrying and ruminating. That mental exhaustion from overthinking can cause us feel so frustrated because we want nothing more than to be free of these thoughts - yet we *seemingly* can't stop. Which inevitably leaves us feeling defeated with thoughts like - "Why bother even trying, I'll never feel good anyways, I don't deserve to be happy or at peace, I will always struggle with this". This final stage is exactly what keeps us disempowered. Stuck in the negative loop. BUT, when we can be with ourselves vs. try to escape ourselves - we make room for REAL change. Like the type of change you may not even think is possible right now. And it isn't by trying to control it, but by surrendering to what it is trying to show us. That's the thing with anxiety - it isn't actually the problem. It's a symptom of something deeper going on. And that's how deep and lasting change happens - when we stop resisting and start listening. If we start to listen to anxiety when it shows up, it means that we are holding space for it. Essentially we are saying to ourselves, "It's okay to feel". When we allow ourselves to feel, we can then practice presence - which is a fancy way of saying that you are being with yourself. When we embody ourselves we can then notice where we are feeling the sensations in our bodies. Chest? Head? Back? Legs? Stomach? Go there. Put your hands gently on the physical location. Slow down. Breathe deeply. Breathe until you feel the anxiety start to calm, until you feel more ease in your breath. Then ask yourself what it is you are *really* feeling. And I say "really" because it isn't just anxiety. A helpful sentence starter is "I am feeling anxious because _______". *continued in comments*👇❤
