Up down, yin yang, joy pain. ☯️ To know one you must know the other.
The human body has its own system of checks and balances to maintain homeostasis. Opponent process theory of emotion explains that after experiencing great joy, your body is triggered to achieve balance by counteracting happiness, sometimes overcorrecting itself. Sadness that sometimes follows happiness has been nicknamed a “happiness hangover.” Feeling happy all the time would make you less motivated, less aware of your surroundings, etc and would not have been beneficial to survival.
For example, before orgasm your body is ramping up on dopamine until you peak. After orgasm, as dopamine declines, a hormone called prolactin is activated and increased. There’s a bit of sadness, detachment or distancing that comes after sex. If we didn’t have these checks and balances, we’d go around constantly seeking pleasure and neglect our other life-sustaining requirements like finding food, raising children, building shelter, etc.

This is a message for anyone out there self-conscious about posting and editing selfies for fear of being labeled “self-involved” or “superficial.” I think it’s more superficial to deny yourself something if it would bring you joy.
Selfies are an art form, they are self expression, they are there to remind you of your beautiful, awesome self when you are feeling anything but. You should never be ashamed of taking or posting them.
Like art, they can come in these forms: realism and idealism. Realism would be your purist, unedited, unfiltered, naturalist real life moments. Idealism is for the perfectionists with a preference for the aesthetically pleasing and an eye for detail. They are different, but they are equally great.
My personal preference is idealism; I’m an art director and I thoroughly enjoy the process and execution. Recently I was introduced to press-on nails so I’ve added that to my routine. They come off the second my photo session is over. So does the makeup so I can return to my usual state of bare-faced, bunhead in sweats. I’ll take something like 300 pictures and find maybe 3 that I like. The rest are garbage.
Some tips for the artistically inclined: find just the right natural light that eliminates all shadows from your face without overexposure. This may take patience and experimentation with different windows, different times of day, etc. Colored lights make great backlighting. I use the apps Airbrush and RNI Films for filters, grain & dust to add interesting texture.
Any other questions? Ask me! Do what makes you happy😊💘✌️
