Henri Matisse created this vibrant oil portrait of his wife, Amélie Noellie Matisse- Parayre. Instead of using traditional methods of shading to depict light, Matisse used varying colors to represent the light hitting her face. Though popular today, in its time the portrait was considered quite garish. In fact, the movement “Fauvism,” of which Matisse was a leader, comes from “les fauves” or “the beasts” in French. Can anyone give us the other, more colorful, name for this memorable painting?

Which photographer famously taught us how horses run? Not only did these series of stop-motion photographic images spark the beginning of the moving picture, but they ended a long-standing debate about the galloping of a horse. Before these images were taken, horses were often depicted in what was referred to as a “flying gallop,” with all limbs outstretched, rather unnaturally, in an elongated leap. The human eye was unable to capture the individual movements that made up the galloping gait, so there was much disagreement as to whether or not all four hooves left the ground at once, and how. This photographerʼs successfully frozen frames settled it: all four hooves left the ground mid-gallop, changing the course of horses in art forever! Can anyone give us the name of this stop-motion pioneer? Leave us your answers below!
