Today we laid to rest my dear friend, John D. Dingell. John was a life long public servant: an army lieutenant during WWII and a Congressman for the state of Michigan for most of his life. John was first elected to Congress in 1955 and held his seat for over 59 years, making him the longest-serving member of Congress in the history of our republic. There isn’t any piece of significant legislation over my entire lifetime that John didn’t have a key hand in: the Civil Rights Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act, among many others. He used his position as Chairman of the powerful Energy and Commerce committee to curb corporate and government corruption and excess and protected the interests of all Americans. As the New York Times recently wrote, “[e]verything from nuts and bolts to blood banks, bottled water and cardiac pacemakers are unquestionably safer now because of Mr. Dingell’s efforts.” He was a great man, and he was a great friend of mine for over 35 years. My family and I were blessed to have one last visit with him, on the day of his passing. This nation—which he loved and so dutifully served—is a lesser place without him.
John’s parting words to his country: “As I prepare to leave this all behind, I now leave you in control of the greatest nation of mankind and pray God gives you the wisdom to understand the responsibility you hold in your hands. May God bless you all, and may God bless America.”
Happy anniversary to the love of my life!! 35 years!! ❤️❤️❤️
