Boulder, CO based painter – plein air / murals / hyperrealism

A one hour painting on a dirt road in East Boulder during golden hour. πŸ–Ό You know, some people say it’s not possible to feel when mosquitoes are biting you. I beg to differ! (Somebody did not consider bringing bug spray. πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ) . . . #eastboulder #bouldercolorado #coloradoart #coloradoartist #pleinair #pleinairartist #pleinairpainter #pleinairpainting #altoids #altoidstinpainting #oilpainting #miniaturepainting #minipainting #tinypainting #smallpainting #micropainting #miniatureart #miniart #tinyart #smallart #microart #miniatureartist #miniartist #tinyartist #smallartist #microartist
That means 50,000! πŸ™‰ ...🏑 πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ: β€˜Fifty thousand’ WHAT exactly? Fifty thousand paintings for ants? πŸ’πŸ½β€β™€οΈ: No. Fifty thousand followers on Instagram. πŸ™Žβ€β™‚οΈ: What’s an Instagram? πŸ™ŽπŸ½β€β™€οΈ: It’s an app on your phone. πŸ™Žβ€β™‚οΈ: I have a brand new cordless phone at home! It’s top of the line. I finally threw out the old rotary phone last week. Can I put an app of Instagram on the new cordless phone and follow this guy? πŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™€οΈ: It doesn’t work like that. You need a CELL phone for that. πŸ™β€β™‚οΈ: Oh, like one of those little things I see people staring at when they are crossing the street? I always just thought they were playing video games... I’ve even seen them looking at these β€˜cell phones’ while they are driving! πŸ™πŸ½β€β™€οΈ: Yeah they do it all the time. But anyway I have to catch an Uber – my drone delivery from Amazon is arriving at my AirBNB around the same time as my Doordash delivery, both of which I am paying for with Bitcoin. On top of all that, I was hoping to have enough time to watch Netflix before bed. πŸ™β€β™‚οΈ: πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ πŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™€οΈ: You should know what all those things are, you’re an emoji! πŸ™β€β™‚οΈ: What’s anβ€” πŸ™ŽπŸ½β€β™€οΈ: πŸƒπŸ½β€β™€οΈ ... It’s amazing to me that we live in a time where so many people have access to each other, that we can all share so much with each other via social media. 10 years ago, this was not as easy to do, and 15-20 years ago it was unheard of. I’m sure there are some people in the older generations who might have similar reactions as the yellow emoji guy when hearing about things like Instagram, Uber and AirBNB. These things are all so new, but they have so seamlessly become a part of so many peoples lives, because they are a logical, natural progression of the technology that exists. I once heard that all the great artists throughout history used β€œthe tools of their time”. Thank you to all of you who follow my work, I truly appreciate it! And thank you to technology, because without it, none of this would be possible, right down to this very β€œpost”! . . . #50k #instagram #followers #emojisitcom
Love is the most fundamental principle of the universe. This idea seems utterly obvious in moments like this. πŸ‘† Im not talking about romantic love, but the love that can be observed in nature (i.e, with these poppies set against a glowing green field, Boulder’s stunning Flatirons, and a beautiful blue sky as crickets were chirping and hummingbirds constantly fly overhead, sometimes twirling around with each other). The sun gives out its light and heat unconditionally, and the plants and animals work assiduously and utilize that energy for their individual and collective striving, all in perfect balance and harmony with each other, without giving or taking too much. Nature, left untouched, naturally emanates this love, which is anchored in an ironclad universal logic. We human beings are naturally drawn to it, even when we may not be able to describe exactly why. As I was doing this second painting of the poppies, all of these ideas were slowly crystallizing and forming into coherent thoughts. When the magnificence of nature strikes us, we pull out our phone or camera, and take tons of pictures of it. Every Spring, when these poppies bloom at the foot of the Flatirons, hoards of people flock up next to them to get their own picture of the poppies with the large, majestic Flatiron rocks in the background. Even though Boulder Open Space puts up signs telling people not to walk off the trail, the grass is nonetheless completely matted down in front of every place where there are poppies growing, which is only about 3 little areas in the park. People just want to capture the natural beauty of the park, and I am also guilty of this. In my defense, over the course of two afternoons painting, I noticed that my presence deterred a lot of people from coming up off the trail to where I was. My point is, every Spring, more and more people are going to want to take their own poppy/Flatirons picture. All of this leads me to the thought to suggest to @boulderosmp to either A) Make a new trail to where the poppies are growing or B) Plant more poppies along the existing trails Or both! ❀️ Remington P.S. β€œLove” does not come from the heart, it comes from the brain! 🧠
My last painting from the Yukon last month. This is Miles Canyon on the Yukon River just outside Whitehorse. Of all the places along the 1,982-mile-long Yukon River, this might be the most famous spot. When I did a Google search of the Yukon River, the first two photos that popped up were of this very canyon. When I arrived, the turquoise water was practically glowing in the sunlight. I tried to keep that in the painting. πŸ‘ . . . #yukon #yukonriver #milescanyon #whitehorse #whitehorseyukon #turquoisewater #pleinair #pleinairartist #pleinairpainter #pleinairpainting #altoids #altoidstinpainting #oilpainting #miniaturepainting #minipainting #tinypainting #smallpainting #micropainting #miniatureart #miniart #tinyart #smallart #microart #miniatureartist #miniartist #tinyartist #smallartist #microartist
😱 Poppies and Lupines and Flatirons, oh my! 😍 Especially with the poppies, I feel like this is quite possibly the most iconic Boulder view there is. Glad I finally got the chance to paint it! The bespoke treehouse dwelling from which I painted in my previous post. As a continuation of my trip up to the Yukon a couple weeks ago, this humble, 100-square-foot, 25-foot-high abode was my home in Whitehorse for the final 3 nights of the trip. I had to climb up two ladders to get into the treehouse through a trap door in the center of the floor. Inside was a bunk bed, a couch and a desk, no electricity, and a porch 1/3 the size of the entire place, with a lovely view of the Yukon River and the northern Rocky Mountains. These photos were taken just after midnight on one of my last nights in the far north, where the beautiful summer days never seem to really end. πŸŒ²πŸ πŸŒ„ P.S. Happy Canada Day! πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ . . . #treehouse #humbleabode #yukon #yukonterritory #whitehorse #farnorth #tinyhouse #tinyhome #pleinair #pleinairartist #pleinairpainter #pleinairpainting #altoids #altoidstinpainting #oilpainting #miniaturepainting #minipainting #tinypainting #smallpainting #micropainting #miniatureart #miniart #tinyart #smallart #microart #miniatureartist #miniartist #tinyartist #smallartist #microartist
Another nocturne from the Yukon, this time from the vantage point of the porch on my temporary treehouse dwelling in Whitehorse. The mountain in the painting is the very same one my buddy and I hiked to the top of two and a half days prior to this. I only realized later that, when painting in the low light, I totally got the shape of the mountain wrong. πŸ™ˆ I originally set out to only shoot a time-lapse video of the sunset over the mountain with my Nikon camera, which was set up on the treehouse porch. Hence the slight wobble in the video from the treehouse swaying in the wind. The time-lapse ended up spanning a duration of 4 hours, and about an hour before its conclusion, I decided on the spur of the moment to do another painting. After it was finished, the ambient light was really poor due to the roof of the treehouse blocking all the light, so I set up my headlamp in the rafters to get the shot. For 40 minutes I tried to get a good shot if it with my Nikon, and settled on one mediocre image and decided to go to bed (at 2am). I included that only halfway decent shot at the end here. Meanwhile, I took another photo of it the next day and it took all of 30 seconds. And I think that photo looks better too, even though it was not taken during similar lighting conditions at all. . . . #nocturne #nocturnepainting #yukon #yukonterritory #whitehorse #canada #pleinair #pleinairartist #pleinairpainter #pleinairpainting #altoids #altoidstinpainting #oilpainting #miniaturepainting #minipainting #tinypainting #smallpainting #micropainting #miniatureart #miniart #tinyart #smallart #microart #miniatureartist #miniartist #tinyartist #smallartist #microartist
3:30am lake reflection in the Yukon wilderness. πŸ• This was the last painting I did at the campsite, the night before returning to civilization. There was enough ambient light that all the colors in the landscape were still clearly visible, and I could still see the colors in my palette without a headlamp. I snapped a few more photos from the same vantage point the next day just before the floatplane arrived. Note: New panel dimensions here. Instead of the usual 2”x3” wood panel, I shaved off 1/8” from the vertical and added 1/8” to the horizontal. Thus, 1 7/8” x 3 1/8”, aka 1.875” x 3.125”. . . . #lakereflection #yukon #yukonterritory #canadianwilderness #nocturne #pleinairnocturne #pleinair #pleinairartist #pleinairpainter #pleinairpainting #altoids #altoidstinpainting #oilpainting #miniaturepainting #minipainting #tinypainting #smallpainting #micropainting #miniatureart #miniart #tinyart #smallart #microart #miniatureartist #miniartist #tinyartist #smallartist #microartist
Another painting from my recent trip to the Yukon wilderness. The late afternoon light (at 9:15pm) was looking really nice on the rocky cliffs up on the mountain. So I set up my camera to do a timelapse of the scene I was painting. After a little while I changed the angle so that I would be in the shot working on the painting. This is an example of how much a landscape changes throughout the course of plein air painting. With the painting, you really gotta just go with an idea and stick to it. In this situation, the light didn’t change as much as other times I’ve painted. But just in case the clouds rolled in, I had a photo reference on my phone, which I made at the beginning of the painting, which I would occasionally glance at to help me with the reflection in the water after the light left the trees and the mountain. This first photo of the finished painting was taken at 11:13pm. πŸŒ²β›° . . . #yukon #yukonwilderness #canada #canadianwilderness #wilderness #wildernesspainting #pleinair #pleinairartist #pleinairpainter #pleinairpainting #altoids #altoidstinpainting #oilpainting #miniaturepainting #minipainting #tinypainting #smallpainting #micropainting #miniatureart #miniart #tinyart #smallart #microart #miniatureartist #miniartist #tinyartist #smallartist #microartist
Lake reflection at sunset in the Yukon wilderness. It was so difficult to go to bed when it was still light out in such a beautiful place. This photo was taken at 12:21am, and the sunlight was still hitting the mountain! In the wee hours of the morning on June 15, it was just two days before the official full moon for June 2019, and a week shy of the summer solstice. 🌝 . . . #yukonwilderness #yukon #yukoncanada #canada #canadianwilderness #lakereflection #midnightsun #pleinair #pleinairartist #pleinairpainter #pleinairpainting #altoids #altoidstinpainting #oilpainting #miniaturepainting #minipainting #tinypainting #smallpainting #micropainting #miniatureart #miniart #tinyart #smallart #microart #miniatureartist #miniartist #tinyartist #smallartist #microartist
